Petition to the Minister of Health

Whereas:
  • Chronic Immunological & Neurological Diseases (CIND) affect 1.4 million Canadians and there is no cure;
  • There is a high cost to individuals and society due to lost income and productivity due to these serious chronic long term illnesses;
  • Virtually unknown to the general public, they are as disabling as MS and are more prevalent in Canada than breast cancer, MS and AIDS combined;
  • Research funding from CIHR has been nominal and inequitable. Between 1999-2009, distributions by CIHR amount to: $4,500/HIV/AIDS patient; $1,000/MS patient; $12/FM patient; under $3/ME patient;
  • For CIND illnesses, Canada lacks proper medical care, social support and treatment;
  • The 2010 Canadian Community Health Survey revealed a high level of disability, unmet health care needs, high demand on the health care system, low food security and a weak sense of belonging to the community;
  • Canada was a leader creating the internationally regarded 2003 ME/CFS Canadian Consensus Criteria; and
  • Canada currently has no strategy in place to address the above concerns;
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to Create a National CIND Strategy to address this urgent Global Health Crisis. We ask our Government to commit to a concerted effort to address the burden CIND diseases places on our economy, health care systems and individuals impacted by CIND illnesses.
