Petition to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry
- On May 8, 2020, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the new Industry Strategy Council that will serve as an advisory board to assess the scope and depth of COVID-19’s impact on industries and inform government’s understanding of specific sectoral pressures;
- The wedding and event industry is a complex horizontal network of diverse and mostly small local businesses. It depends on people gatherings for its livelihood. Some business are specialized in weddings while for others weddings comprise part of their portfolio of business;
- As a sector of the overall event industry, the wedding industry in Canada generates approximately $4.5B (2019), with more than 150,000 events annually;
- Because of COVID-19, a large portion of this year’s weddings are cancelled or postponed to 2021, which threatens the short-term viability of the sector;
- In addition, the wedding industry is challenged with long-term sustainability with many businesses facing closure. There will be a lag in the return to pre-COVID-19 business activity that may be felt for several years; and
- The COVID-19 situation has devastated the Canadian wedding industry that creates well-paying jobs and strengthens the middle class.
