Petition to the Prime Minister

Whereas:
  • The Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) benefit is intended to financially help small businesses severely impacted by the COVID19 pandemic pay their rent;
  • But the benefit is only available If the landlord applies for it, thus leaving the small business powerless to access the benefit;
  • Additionally many landlords state they are either not eligible or don't know if they qualify; and
  • All of this means that yet another month has passed and small businesses are required to pay rent when their businesses have little to no revenue.
We, the undersigned, Small businesses of Canada impacted by the economic slowdown due to the pandemic, call upon the Prime Minister to update the CECRA benefit to either:
1- Allow the CECRA benefit to be provided at the discretion of the small business and not the landlord so that businesses can receive the benefit without having to convince or cajole their landlord to apply;
2- Make it a mandatory requirement for landlords of small businesses to apply if requested by a small business that is a tenant in their property; or
3- Provide a grant ,instead of a forgivable loan, to the landlords so they will have no hesitancy in applying for the benefit and small businesses can get the rent relief they need.
