Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Parents are currently unable to control what information websites can collect from their children under 13 years old, and how this information is used;
  • Parents are not notified before online platforms collect personal information and data from their children under 13 years old;
  • Online platforms are not required to get parents’ verifiable consent prior to collecting personal information from their children;
  • Online platforms and apps can currently manipulate children into purchases, and show children inappropriate advertisements, such as those for gambling, alcohol and harmful behaviour; and
  • There are no procedures currently in place to protect the confidentiality, security, and integrity of personal information collected from children under 13 years old by online platforms and apps.
We, the undersigned, Citizens (or residents) of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to implement baseline federal legislation that protects the data privacy and online safety of children under 13 years old.
