Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled

Whereas:
  • Raif Badawi has been a prisoner of conscience since June 2012 in Saudi Arabia and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, 1,000 lashes and a fine of 1 million riyals (roughly $289,000 Canadian)
  • Canada is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to the Charter of the United Nations and presents itself as a defender of human rights and individual freedoms as set out for example in the Canadian Charter of Human Rights
  • Canada is a signatory to the International Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment
  • Canada must encourage universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms
We, the undersigned, Residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to confer on Raif Badawi the title of honorary citizen of Canada.
