Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Public transit makes important contributions to the environment, greenhouse gas reductions and air quality, healthy lifestyles, and economic development;
  • The public transit tax credit is a way to recognize and encourage people to choose an environmentally friendly mode of transportation that does not cause congestion in urban spaces;
  • This tax credit is a fair incentive to use public transit because it is based on personal income. In some regions, users can sometimes save the equivalent of two monthly passes per year;
  • The public transit tax credit benefits seniors, families, students and the middle class; and
  • The Government of Canada committed to reducing the tax burden on the middle class and the Prime Minister of Canada said, “We were elected on a promise to reduce taxes for the middle class.”
We, the undersigned, Citizens (or residents) of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to restore the public transit tax credit and make it retroactive to January 1, 2018.
