E-petition
Initiated by patrick jensen from burnaby, British Columbia

Original language of petition: English

Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • We are increasingly being directed to conduct our business via the internet,  including by the Canada Revenue Agency;
  • The internet has become an essential utility and access to it is a prerequisite for just about every task necessary to being a functioning member of society these days;
  • In 2011 the United Nations declared that internet access is a human right;
  • It is closely linked to the right of freedom of speech and freedom of expression;
  • Internet rates in Canada have increased substantially (approximately 65% for basic service) in the last 3 years and continue to go up;
  • Internet providers invariably cite 'infrastucture costs' as the reason;
  • There have been substantial rate increases in the last few years and there is an apparent lack of accountability.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to consider placing Internet providers under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission so that Internet rate increases must be requested and justified as with other essential utilities.
