Petition to the Minister of Veterans Affairs

Whereas:
  • The OSI/PTSD service dog has been deemed to be a medical tool for effective use by veterans in need;
  • It provides grounding for those whose lives have been turned upside down as a direct result of service to their country;
  • Many organizations provide a service dog at no charge, however, the continuing daily and veterinary care is left for the veteran to provide;
  • Unfortunately, countless members in the veteran community fall into the “needs” category; and
  • Immediate action is required to provide funding and support of the provision of OSI/PTSD service dogs to vulnerable veterans as appropriate.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada and members of the OSI/PTSD service dog community, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to:
1. Conduct a needs assessment and identify those financially vulnerable veterans seeking the medical tool of an OSI/PTSD service;
2. Provide critical funding, in a timely manner, to those vulnerable veterans with service dogs to effectively enable the ability to take care of the daily and veterinary care; and
3. Establish a line item for a needs assessment for the extra care of a service dog for all veterans under their Veterans Independent Program benefits.
