E-petition

Petition to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry

Whereas:
  • Since public services have gone paperless, access to telecommunications has become an essential service;
  • Canada’s population density is comparable to that of Australia, yet our telecommunications costs continue to be seven times more expensive;
  • The market is 89% owned by three companies;
  • Since 2015, $7.6 billion from the federal government in addition to billions from the provinces have been invested in the infrastructure of these private companies;
  • Given inflation, some people have to go into debt to keep their communications;
  • Telecommunications access equipment is expensive and quickly becomes outdated; and
  • Access to public networks is not secure and is therefore not a viable option for the public.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to take immediate and decisive action to address the exorbitant rates charged by Canada’s telecommunications oligopolies. Specifically, we are calling for the establishment of a regulatory framework that will set a maximum rate that telecommunications companies can charge, for both mobile data and residential rates.
