Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:
  • Worldwide, 80 billion pieces of clothing are consumed every year, a 400% increase from only twenty years ago. However, approximately 85% of these textiles end up in a landfill every year;
  • Fast fashion generates enormous amounts of waste, from production cutoffs to discarded clothing. 57% of all discarded clothing ends up in landfill, contributing to the growing problem of textile waste;
  • The entire lifecycle of fast fashion, from production and transportation to disposal, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. This exacerbates climate change, impacting ecosystems and biodiversity;
  • The fast fashion industry is a significant contributor to the climate crisis, responsible for as much as 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions, as much as the European Union; and
  • If the industry maintains its course, an increase of 50% in greenhouse gas emissions is expected within a decade.
We, the undersigned, residents of the Province of British Columbia, call upon the House of Commons to take immediate and decisive action to address the environmental impacts of the fast fashion industry. Specifically, we urge the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations tailored to the fashion and textile sector. We call upon the House of Commons to mandate an addition to the current EPR legislation across provinces to address textiles. This could include waste collection programs, establishing design standards for recyclability, providing financial incentives for sustainable design, and requiring transparent reporting on environmental efforts within the industry.
