Initiated by MOHAMMED ALI SAIDANE from Quebec, Quebec

Original language of petition: French

Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:
  • Tunisia was a beacon of hope for the Arab-Muslim world after the 2011 revolution when it established a democracy;
  • Since July 25, 2021, President Kais Saied began his power grab by suspending parliament and dissolving all independent democratic institutions;
  • The actions of President Kais Saied undermined the fledgling democracy, human rights protections, freedom of speech and judicial independence;
  • Key political figures, parliamentarians and journalists were imprisoned for taking a stand against the president’s power grab;
  • Civilians were tried before military courts and at least 12 of them were sentenced for having exercised their right to free speech;
  • Canada has a responsibility to defend human rights and to promote democratic values at the international level;
  • Tunisia has made significant progress in recent years and Canada can support Tunisians in their efforts to maintain their hard-won gains in the areas of human rights and democracy.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada supporting the Collectif de soutien aux démocrates tunisiens – Québec, call upon the House of Commons to ask President Kais Saied to:
1- Reinstate the High Judicial Council, recently shut down, in order to shield judges from arbitrary removal; and
2- Encourage returning to a national dialogue, as sought by various political and civilian forces and stakeholders in an effort to end the country’s current stalemate.
