Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:
  • The Myanmar military continues to forcibly displace, persecute, torture and rape civilians, and destroy villages;
  • Civilian populations across the country, including ethnic and religious minorities, lack access to medicine, healthcare, shelter and education;
  • The Myanmar military is barring independent reporting of the crisis and repressing civil society and local humanitarian associations; and
  • Global Affairs Canada announced its plans to support humanitarian assistance and human rights in Myanmar, as per "Canada's Strategy to respond to the Rohingya and Myanmar crises (2021-2024)".
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to:
1. Implement new channels for broader aid provision due to the worsening humanitarian crisis' after 2021 coup;
2. Allocate new aid packages or expand existing packages to support more internally displaced populations across Myanmar;
3. Establish regular engagement with Burmese community stakeholders and constituents in Canada to discuss initiatives for humanitarian relief;
4. Promote wider reporting of the crisis by supporting independent journalists and other media personnel from Myanmar; and
5. Support local civil society and humanitarian actors in establishing fact-finding and accountability mechanisms.
