Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled

Whereas:
  • In 2014, the Russian Federation initiated the Russia-Ukraine War by invading Crimea, annexing Crimea from Ukraine, and supporting separatist attacks in Donetsk and Luhansk against Ukraine;
  • On February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation escalated the Russia-Ukraine War by launching a wide-scale invasion of Ukraine;
  • The Russian Federation's military aggression in Ukraine is a violation of international law;
  • The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian, and the Ukrainian word for “vodka” is “horilka”; and
  • Permitting distillers and vendors selling vodka in Canada to label their bottles with the Ukrainian word "horilka" instead of requiring them to use the Russian word "vodka” will raise awareness about the Russian Federation’s military aggression in Ukraine.
We, the undersigned, citizens or residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to change the Canadian Food and Drug Regulations to include horilka as synonymous to the definition of vodka, so that they read:
B.02.080 [S]. (1) Horilka and/or Vodka shall be a potable alcoholic distillate obtained from potatoes, cereal grain or any other material of agricultural origin fermented by the action of yeast or a mixture of yeast and other micro-organisms. (2) The distillate shall be treated with charcoal or other means so that the horilka and/or vodka is without distinctive character, aroma or taste. (3) Horilka and/or Vodka produced, in whole or in part, from material of agricultural origin other than potatoes or cereal grain, shall carry in close proximity to the common name, the statement “produced from” followed by the name of all material of agricultural origin used.
