Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects the freedom of religion of all Canadians; and
  • Recommendations made by the Advisory Panel on Systemic Racism and Discrimination to the Canadian Armed Forces restrict the rights of chaplains to adhere to the tenets of their faith.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Formally apologize to Canadians of the many faith communities offended by the Advisory Panel on Systemic Racism and Discrimination in the Canadian Armed Forces recommendations restricting the rights of chaplains to adhere to the tenets of their faith without duress or coercion by the government; and
2. Affirm publicly that they reject wholeheartedly, and without reservation, the discriminatory recommendation of a political values test for military chaplaincy.
