Petition to the Prime Minister
Whereas:
- Canada's defense budget, as a percentage of GDP, is lower than most NATO members and below NATO's recommendations;
- Current perilous circumstances clearly demonstrate that the target percentage must be at least 2%;
- The percentage of GDP allocated to Canada's defense has been too low for too long; and
- The Russian invasion of Ukraine calls for a strong and immediate commitment between "Western allies".
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Prime Minister to act swiftly and resolutely on the following:
1. Quickly and significantly raise the percentage of GDP allocated to National Defense to a level which demonstrates a willingness to defend our own borders (e.g. the Arctic) and enables us to honour our international commitments and participate effectively in organizations such as NATO; and
2. Set aside any short-term unspent excess funds for future use.
