Original language of petition: English

Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled

Whereas:
  • On February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation launched an illegal and unprovoked full-scale offensive against Ukraine;
  • The Russian Federation has committed numerous egregious war crimes, crimes against humanity, and violations of international law;
  • Many Russian state-owned or funded companies assist the Russian invasion against Ukraine;
  • These companies are not sanctioned by Canada, or the sanctions are not broad enough to disrupt operations in an impactful manner;
  • These companies contribute greatly to the Russian Federation’s ability to commit war crimes, crimes against humanity, and further violations of international law;
  • The Russian Federation has abused veto powers granted by its permanent membership gained by now contested succession to the former Soviet Union seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC);
  • The Russian Federation abused the rotational presidency of the UN, adjourning the first attempted meeting wherein a UN resolution demanding an end to Russia’s invasion would have otherwise passed; and
  • The Russian Federation has threatened to attack sovereign UNSC and United Nations General Assembly members that assist Ukraine.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Provide additional lethal aid to Ukraine, including bulletproof vests and anti-tank weapons;
2. Broaden or initiate economic sanctions against Russian state-owned or funded companies High Precision Weapons, JSC Russian Helicopters, Kalashnikov Concern, KAMAZ, and Uralvagonzavod; and
3. Direct the Canadian mission to the United Nations to begin the process of calling for a vote to suspend the Russian Federation from participating in the United Nations General Assembly, while retaining its membership.
