Petition to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change

Whereas:
  • The ongoing deforestation of Indonesia and surrounding regions is created by the farming of palm oil;
  • The shift from natural forests to palm oil production for economic purposes have triggered a massive loss of biodiversity;
  • The loss of biodiversity has led to numerous species dwindling in numbers, including importantly the endangering of orangutans; and
  • It has been estimated that the massive deforestation, Indonesian forest has lost six millions of hectares between 2000 and 2012, and it has led to the death of an estimated 3,000 orangutans per year since the 1970s, and that they could entirely disappear by 2050.
We, the undersigned, Simon Fraser University students and residents of British Columbia, call upon the Minister of Environment and Climate Change to immediately impose a tax on raw palm oil and palm oil products coming from Indonesia, to decentivise its use and subsequently the harsh farming methods used to obtain it.
