Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • To resolve the 37 active, long-term water advisories in 29 First Nations communities across Ontario, Manitoba, and Nunavut;
  • To restore access to clean drinking water to all communities, their families and households;
  • To facilitate instillation of proper water and waste management infrastructure that provides First Nations communities with safe access to drinking water;
  • The human right to water and sanitation is a principle that acknowledges that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to every person's life according to United Nations Resolution 64/292; and
  • Canada continues to provide First Nations peoples with the highest level of environmental quality for all Canadians and ultimately contribute to sustainable development; as declared in the Environmental Protection Act.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada and Turtle Island, call upon the Government of Canada to develop strategic and sustainable solutions to supply safe drinking water for all First Nations communities by:
(i) effectively ending all short-term and long-term drinking water advisories as promised by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,
(ii) expediting the construction of new and existing water treatment facilities and repairs necessary to have reliable access to safe drinking water,
(iii) working with First Nations communities to make clean drinking water accessible and improving water quality,
(iv) providing First Nations communities with the highest level of environmental quality.
