Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • In the weeks following the election of the Liberal government, it promised to act quickly to protect Quebec dairy farmers. Unfortunately, the dairy industry has been left to fend for itself, and it has yet to receive a clear response from the federal Minister of Agriculture;
  • In 2015, it was estimated that a farmer could have lost an average of $1,000 a week due to diafiltered milk imports. It is very clear that dairy farmers are losing money due to the Minister’s inaction;
  • The National Assembly of Quebec has adopted a unanimous motion calling on the federal government to require the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to enforce its cheese composition regulations using the same definition for diafiltered milk as the Canada Border Services Agency, that is, a protein concentrate; and
  • The wait has been long enough. The Minister must immediately stop the financial hemorrhaging caused by the importation of this milk protein.
We, the undersigned, electors of the Mirabel constituency, call upon the Government of Canada to support the work of thousands of Quebeckers in the dairy industry working to build Quebec’s economic prosperity, and to ensure the Canadian Food Inspection Agency enforces its cheese composition regulations using the same definition for diafiltered milk as the Canada Border Services Agency, that is, a protein concentrate.
