Original language of petition: English

Petition to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development

Whereas:
  • The City of Saint John, according to 2013 taxfiler data, has a child poverty rate of 31%;
  • The Government of Canada has committed to make significant new investments in social infrastructure; and
  • The Minister of Families, Children and Social Development has been mandated to lead the development of a Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy that would set targets to reduce poverty and measure and publicly report on progress.
We, the undersigned, residents of Saint John – Rothesay, call upon the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development to designate Saint John, New Brunswick, as a demonstration site for the Canadian Poverty Reduction Strategy for testing and evaluating new and promising poverty reduction initiatives, which would include investments in affordable housing, skills training, literacy, neighbourhood revitalization, early childhood education and youth mental health.
