Petition to the Government of Canada

  • Restrictions on movement and gatherings related to the containment of COVID-19 have had a negative impact on the mental and physical well-being of mother’s and babies;
  • Mothers and babies are not receiving adequate health care in many areas of Canada due to the redirection of these health resources away from them and towards COVID-19 containment;
  • Mothers on maternity leave during COVID-19 require more time together with their baby to address the harm done to them both physically and mentally during this pandemic;
  • Mothers and babies are feeling forgotten and unsupported by the government while simultaneously having their own personal supports restricted or removed completely;
  • Many mothers do not have safe childcare options to send their 12 months old due to daycare restrictions during the pandemic; and
  • Safe spaces for mother and baby to bond with other mothers and babies have been closed by government.
We, the undersigned, Canadian mothers on maternity leave during COVID-19, call upon the Government of Canada to extend paid maternity leave for a minimum of three months for mothers in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic, and allow all mothers who are currently on 12 months maternity leave the option of switching into the 18 months maternity leave.
This will allow for mothers the time to access the health care appointments necessary for them and their babies while on maternity leave, and more time to find adequate childcare for her 12 months old, as well as ensuring better development for their babies, and better mental and physical health for both mother and baby before they are separated on her return to work.
