Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • The Calgary Stampede, an organisation that represents the very best of Calgary, faces serious budgetary problems given the requirement to cancel Stampede events;
  • The Calgary Stampede is a huge economic contributor to Calgary, the province of Alberta, and the country, which employs thousands of Calgarians and generates $700 million in economic benefit to Canada, of which $540 million directly supports Alberta’s restaurants, hotels and businesses each year;
  • The Calgary Stampede Foundation is among the most recognized and respected charitable organisations in Alberta, investing $2.7 million dollars annually to programs that positively impact the community through multiple programs;
  • The Calgary Stampede has never been canceled, even in the face of the devastating 2013 floods;
  • Alberta is facing an economic crisis unlike any province due to the continued decimation of the energy sector, which left so many unemployed even prior to COVID-19; and
  • Albertans are not adequately represented by the Government of Canada and have been on the receiving end of several years of economically punitive legislation, worsening the ongoing economic downturn.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to provide a detailed plan as to how they will support the Calgary Stampede so that it will continue to provide thousands of jobs, millions of dollars in investment in Alberta, and be a symbol of community spirit for all Canadians.
