Petition to the Minister of Finance

Whereas:
  • The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) is only available to those who have stopped working specifically due to COVID-19;
  • Many students voluntarily left employment in September in order to study full time and are now unable to find Summer work due to COVID-19;
  • Most students rely largely upon summer earnings to support themselves during the academic year;
  • Due to the specificity of the CERB only being applicable to those who have ceased working due to COVID-19, most students cannot access this benefit;
  • There are no alternative benefits available to students in this time of crisis; and
  • Many students will be left unable to support themselves through the next academic year, and a large number will struggle to support themselves through the summer.
We, the undersigned, Students of Canada, call upon the Minister of Finance to make the Canada Emergency Response Benefit available to students, or allow an alternative benefit to students, as to allow those in full-time education to support themselves through the summer and next academic year.
