E-petition

Original language of petition: English

Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • In 2017, the province of Manitoba opted out of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Act thereby creating an open market for Manitoba commercial fishers;
  • The commercial fishers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan are no longer required to sell their harvest to the FFMC in Winnipeg;
  • The vast majority of Manitoba and Saskatchewan commercial fishers have re-signed harvesting contracts with FFMC despite its dubious future;
  • Manitoba commercial fishery generates nearly $30 Million in direct income to fishers;
  • A vast and prosperous new market opportunity exists for inland fishers if they can consolidate and leverage volumes, streamline logistics, modernize facilities, engage new technologies, invest in value-added processing, eco-certification and innovatively re-brand, promote and market their unique products;
  • No trade or industry association exists today to represent, promote and be the collective voice of ALL Canadian inland fish producers; and
  • An inland fish producers trade association for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and NWT commercial fishers is desperately needed to capture new market opportunities and realize tremendous economic potential.
We, the undersigned, Commercial fishers and industry stakeholders, call upon the Government of Canada to support the establishment of a Canadian Inland Fish Producers Association or Federation in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to represent, advocate for and promote Canadian inland fisheries, fishers and fish products to global markets, including encouraging the Canadian Fish and Seafood Opportunities Fund to provide seed funding to establish the organization over a 5-year start-up phase.
