Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • The Canadian government has publicly committed itself to the defence of human rights internationally;
  • A federal law (the Justice for Victims of Foreign Corrupt Officials Act or Magnitsky Act) was passed a year ago which allows for restrictive measures to be taken against “foreign nationals responsible for gross violations of internationally recognized human rights”;
  • To date, the Canadian government has taken no action against Russian authorities responsible for the unlawful imprisonment and brutal ill treatment of three Ukrainian hunger strikers (Oleh Sentsov, Oleksandr Shumko and Volodymyr Balukh) and approximately 60 other Ukrainian political prisoners; and
  • The Magnitsky Act has not been invoked to sanction Russian officials responsible for the violation of the human rights of these Ukrainian citizens.
We, the undersigned, Citizens and Residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to demand the release of Ukrainian political prisoners Oleh Sentsov, Oleksandr Shumko, Volodymyr Balukh and the dozens of others detained illegally by the Russian government and to employ all possible sanctions, including measures outlined in the Magnitsky Act, to secure their freedom.
