E-petition
Initiated by Noma Sarai from Montreal, Quebec

Original language of petition: English

Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Mandatory minimums set obligatory sentences for specified crimes without recognition for various unique elements of each case;
  • Mandatory minimums are inextricably linked with discriminatory foundations that targets specific marginalized populations, particularly the indigenous community;
  • Mandatory Minimum’s one-size-fits-all approach have detrimental effects on individuals, families, and the society at large; and
  • Some mandatory minimums have been ruled as unconstitutional across Canada.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to make it a priority to abolish mandatory minimums so the courts can operate in a fair criminal justice system, where sentences are customized, fair,and appropriate to the severity of each case.
