Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • The Federal Holidays Act states: 2 (1) July 1, not being a Sunday, is a legal holiday and shall be kept and observed as such throughout Canada under the name of "Canada Day";
  • The Federal Holidays Act states: (2) When July 1 is a Sunday, July 2 is a legal holiday and shall be kept and observed as such throughout Canada under the name of "Canada Day";
  • As a result, businesses must close on the Monday; and
  • As many provinces now have Sunday shopping, this means that their employees must work on Sunday, July 1, for regular pay.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Minister of Canadian Heritage to Amend the Holidays Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. H-5), concerning "Canada Day" (R.S., c. H-7, s. 2; 1980-81-82-83, c. 124, s.)1 to read:
July 1 is a legal holiday and shall be kept and observed as such throughout Canada under the name of "Canada Day".
