Original language of petition: English

Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • "We know when we invest in women we strengthen our economy" as mentioned by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau;
  • Women and men are currently not paid equally;
  • Canada does not currently have pay equity legislation;
  • Pay equity has been promised over 40 years ago, again in 2016 and again in February 2018;
  • Work of equal value should receive equal pay;
  • When compensating employees, certain aspects of work typically done by women are not often recognized; and
  • Most recent Canadian numbers showing "women on average earn 87 cents for every dollar made by a man" as reported by the Financial Post on February 22, 2018.
We, the undersigned, Citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to :
1) Legislate pay equity for work of equal value for all persons. (Women, men, and transgendered); and
2) Further resolve to eradicate the gender pay gap by 2022, the same date set by Iceland who was the first country to pass pay equality legislation.
