Seniors (aged 65 years and over) are the fastest growing segment of Canada’s population accounting for 16.9 per cent and for the first time have exceeded the child population aged below 15 years (Census 2016);
Seniors will remain the fastest growing cohort and are projected to constitute one fourth of the population by 2036; and
Seniors, despite their large and increasing numbers, remain unrepresented in the Government with no one in Cabinet exclusively mandated to consider their needs and inform cross-departmentally a coordinated approach for addressing various relevant issues and oversee that the system is working effectively for our ageing population.
We, the undersigned, Citizens and Residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to appoint a Minister or a Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for Seniors Affairs to ensure a coordinated approach towards safeguarding the interests of seniors and improving their quality of life.
