Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • The Trans Mountain pipeline project is of national importance as it has significant economic benefits for our entire country, which in turn supports social programs across Canada;
  • British Columbia’s NDP government has introduced regulations that could prevent the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline project, even after it has passed rigorous, independent and evidence-based decision-making on the safety of the project;
  • Section 92 of our Constitution outlines all of the provincial powers, and specifically gives the federal government control over shipping lines, railways, canals, telegraphs and other works or undertakings that connect one province with one another;
  • Parliament can declare that the Trans Mountain pipeline, and the products it carries, work for the “general advantage of Canada”;
  • Parliament has a duty to ensure that local issues do not supersede the national interests of our country; and
  • The Prime Minister has a duty to maintain national unity.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to use Section 92.10(c) of the Constitution Act to declare, via the Parliament of Canada, that the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline project is for the general advantage of Canada.
