E-petition
Initiated by Keith de Silvia-Legault from Oakville, Ontario

Original language of petition: English

Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:
  • Administrative Segregation is known to worsen the mental health of inmates;
  • In 2011, a United Nations committee deemed the practice of Solitary Confinement (also known as Administrative Segregation) as a form of a torture and called upon countries to ban the practice;
  • The use of Administrative Segregation has already been in decline since 2015; and
  • In January of 2018, the British Columbia Supreme Court ruled indefinite Solitary Confinement (also known as Administrative Segregation) unconstitutional.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to abolish or at least reform the practice of Administrative Segregation (also known as Solitary Confinement) in federal correctional facilities across Canada.
