Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Stated by the Prime Minister, the Government of Canada is committed to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and enacting all 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
  • In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission called on the federal government to collaborate with Indigenous peoples to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour residential school survivors, their families, and communities, as per Call to Action #80.
  • The date for such a holiday could be June 2nd, the day that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its final report in 2015
  • The Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls on the government to ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.
  • The experiences of survivors and victims of residential schools should be remembered and honoured by the Canadian public.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to Establish a “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation”
