Technical Guide for Supporters

When creating an e-petition, the person initiating the petition (the petitioner) must name at least five potential supporters and provide their first name, last name and e-mail address. Once the petition has been submitted, potential supporters will receive an automated e-mail asking them to confirm their support. The following steps explain what supporters are next required to do.

How to support a petition

Step 1: Check your email

Select the confirmation link sent by e-mail

Step 2: Provide the requested information

Fill out all the fields

Step 3: Confirm your eligibility and your support for the petition

Check the boxes confirming your eligibility

(Canadian citizen or resident of Canada)

and your agreement to the Terms of Use

How to track the petition you supported

If you are one of the first five people to confirm support for the proposed petition, you will receive automated e-mails informing you about each step the petition has passed: a Member authorizing the publication of the petition, its publication on the website, its presentation in the House, etc. Once the petition is published online, you can view the petition’s details on the House of Commons e-petitions website.

Step 2: View the petition you supported

Find your petition using the search tools

(for example by petition number, subject or Member of Parliament)

Step 3: Go to the specific webpage of the petition

Select the petition number or its subject

Step 4: You can also track the petition’s progress by subscribing to the RSS feed

Select Subscribe to RSS Feed in the upper-left corner

Step 1: Open the House of Commons e-petitions website

Select sign or view

Step 2: View the petition you supported

Find the petition using the search tools

(for example by petition number, subject or Member of Parliament)

Step 3: Go to the specific webpage of the petition

Select the petition number or its subject

Step 4: Share the petition you supported

Select Share this page

(upper-right corner)
