Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Canadians enjoy “the right to life, liberty, and the security of the person”;
  • Since 1988, Canadian woman have also enjoyed the “legal” right to protect their own security and determine their own future in relation to the carriage of a fetus to term (the “Right to Choose”), with abortions having long been: funded by our universal health care system; and provided on request and on a confidential basis for all ages;
  • In 2022, notwithstanding fifty years of precedent and constitutional protection for “life and liberty”, the Right to Choose was overturned in the United States by the Supreme Court, resulting in a wave of harmful restrictions on the Right to Choose being imposed by state courts and legislatures;
  • The Leader of the Official Opposition has confirmed his willingness to allow Members of Parliament to introduce legislation to restrict the Right to Choose; and
  • Canadians are not prepared to permit the Right to Choose to be made subject to, or restricted by, by any Canadian legislature or by the prerogative, discretion and/or ideological bias of any politically-appointed Canadian judge.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada believe that "the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation and hereby, call upon the Government of Canada to seek and secure the required resolutions of the Senate, House of Commons and provincial legislatures to expressly entrench the Right to Choose by amendment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
