Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Numerous women have been sexually assaulted, and, in most cases, the perpetrator receives an unjustly lenient sentence; and
  • These inadequate sentences do not serve as deterrents but instead embolden these criminals to continue their heinous actions, making countless women feel unsafe every day.
We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to change the sentencing of crimes involving sexual assault by urging the Minister of Justice to:
1. Consider increasing the sentencing for sexual assault crimes significantly so that some measure of justice can be provided to victims and future assaults could potentially be deterred; and
2. Reconsider the guidelines for sexual assault sentencing: “for basic sexual assault, the minimum sentencing could be four years and the maximum could be 10 years; when the victim is under the age of legal consent (16) the minimum could be six years and maximum could be 14 years; with sexual assault with aggravative factors the minimum sentencing could be eight years and the maximum could be 16 years; and for aggravative sexual assault the minimum could be 10 years and the maximum could be life in prison (20).”
