Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • The Government of Canada has ratified the eight Fundamental Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women;
  • The Government of Canada, labour organizations and numerous organizations for social change played a key role in the adoption of the ILO’s Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189);
  • The majority of ILO members voted in favour of Convention No. 189, which sets minimum standards to make domestic work more decent and fair, and recognizes domestic workers’ freedom of association;
  • ILO Recommendation No. 201 lists non-binding measures that governments can introduce to ensure their legislation complies with Convention No. 189; and
  • Despite domestic workers’ significant contribution to the national economy, Canada has still not ratified Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189).
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
• ratify the International Labour Organization’s Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189); and
• invite provincial and territorial governments to harmonize their laws with the International Labour Organization’s Recommendation No. 201, which accompanies this Convention.
