Petition to the Government of Canada

WHEREAS:

  • The Community of Langdon is experiencing significant population growth, and is expected to continue growing;
  • The Closure of the Langdon Post Office has resulted in residents being redirected to Strathmore;
  • The transportation burden to seniors and persons with disabilities is amplified because of the post office closure;
  • Canada Post's efforts have failed in ensuring the establishment of a post office to serve Langdon; and
  • Sending and receiving mail is an essential service.

We, the undersigned residents of the Hamlet of Langdon in the Province of Alberta, call upon the Government of Canada to:

  • Provide a detailed explanation of the reasons for the closure of the Langdon Canada Post Office; and
  • Work with Canada Post, the Minister of Public Services and Procurement, and the Minister of Rural Economic Development to ensure a permanent, viable Canada Post Office is established to serve the community of Langdon and its surrounding area.

Response by the Minister of Public Services and Procurement

Signed by (Minister or Parliamentary Secretary): Charles Sousa

Canada Post thanks customers for their ongoing patience and understanding as the search for a permanent home for the Langdon Post Office continues.

Canada Post has been successful in staffing the postmaster position in the Community of Langdon. Canada Post is continuing to search for a permanent location to host this post office. The local Postmaster identified a new location in Langdon; however, until it can be safely opened, former Postal Box customers must continue to use the temporary community mailboxes that have been reinstated, and the Strathmore Post Office for complete postal services.

Canada Post wants to reassure the community that they are working with the Postmaster to resolve this matter.

In the meantime, community mailboxes are temporarily installed to allow customers to pick up mail and parcels, and post mail. Customers who have questions about their postal services can contact Canada Post's Customer Service team online at canadapost.ca/support or by telephone at 1-866-607-6301 (TTY: 1-800-267-2797).
